Standards For Our Time

I have been learning about different types of 

standards developed for schools and students for a 

while either through classes or work. Not one of them 

was designed like the ISTE Standards. These type of 

standards are designed for students, educators, 

administrators, coaches, and computer science 

teachers. All of these individuals help reevaluate 

education to create a better learning environment. 

With the growth of technology in the world, it was 

inevitable for technology to be used in the classroom. 

That’s when digital learning has become such a big 

impact on the learning process for students. 

I especially like how the standards were separated depending on the role. For the students 

it was separated into 7 parts: empowered learner, digital citizen, knowledge constructor, 

an innovative designer, computational thinker, creative communicator, and global 

collaborator. All these parts have to deal with learning in the digital world. The educators 

also have 7 parts in the ISTE standards including learner, leader, citizen, collaborator, 

designer, facilitator, and analyst. Being an educator, you have to be a continuous learner. 

The learning process doesn’t stop when you get into the classroom. As educators, we have 

to be supportive and have the students come first. For the learning environment, we have 

to teach the students how to use the digital tools in a safe way, create a good reputation to 

build relationships. There are many roles an educator can take; one of the roles is a 

collaborator. They are a collaborator when they share ideas with colleagues and get 

feedback from their students. I really enjoyed reviewing the ISTE standards for different 

roles in the education field.
